What is an Employee Handbook?

In simple terms, an employee manual outlines everything your employees need to know about working at your company, from the expectations you have of them to how you deal with complaints. Generally, this will be handed out on an employee’s first day. Plus, your handbook may also include information on company perks and values. That way, you can show the benefits of working at your company and create a positive working environment. And, of course, it should clearly set out your stance on issues such as discrimination and harassment. After all, you want to ensure that every employee is treated fairly.

The Value of Our Services

With a full handbook, you can reduce the risk of workplace disputes. This will save you time and money later down the line, allowing you to focus on the other aspects of your business. On the surface, not having a formal agreement can affect performance and make it difficult to enforce procedures. But more than that, this can also affect your bottom line. If you fail to follow the Employment Rights Act 1996, the employment tribunal can increase the compensatory award for unfair dismissal by up to 25%. As a business owner, you need to make sure that you get your handbook right the first time.

Why Have A Manual?

Naturally, employees will want to know where they stand. With a handbook, there will be no doubt about sick days, holiday pay, company perks or even employee responsibilities. As long as the key procedures and policies are covered, you can rest easy knowing that your handbook is legally compliant.

In an ideal world, there would never be any conflict at work. However, the reality is that disputes with previous or current are more common than you may think. To reduce risk, you will need to get your employees to agree to the policies and terms in the handbook, which are set out by the Employment Rights Act 1996 in sections 1 to 6. Keep in mind that anyone who has been employed for longer than a month will need to have access to the handbook. So, it’s a good idea to hand out handbooks with employment contracts.

If you fail to provide employees with a manual, you may run into trouble. Employees can claim unfair dismissal if there is a workplace conflict. So, to avoid such problems, make sure that employees are made aware of their terms of employment in the initial induction stage. We can help you keep track of who has received and agreed to the policies and even confirm whether your employees have read any updates.

Make sure you are familiar with Employment Law legislation.

The Difference Between An Employment Contract and Handbook?

The key difference between the two is that employment contracts are written for individual employees. Whereas, employee handbooks are written for all employees, no matter what their role is. While they are not required by law, they can help you avoid claims of unfair dismissal. That is why we advise you to make all new employees sign a confirmation that they have received and read the handbook.

What Must Your Handbook Contain?

Your handbook should provide your employees with detailed information on policies covering a range of different areas.

Include the following:

Contract & Employee Handbook
Annual review of your current documentation, including suggested updates tailored to your culture and working practices.
Alcohol and drug abuse
Appeals
Attendance, including sickness and absence
Bereavement and compassionate leave
Company Introduction and Rules
Disciplinary
Employee Rights and Responsibilities
Flexible working
Grievance
Harassment and bullying
Introduction to company
Maternity and paternity leave
Standards of acceptable behaviour
